Position Summary
As the Technical Operations Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end technical development of apparel products within the Embilipitiya plant. Your primary goal is to ensure technical feasibility, process efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and timely readiness for bulk production. You will bridge the gap between design and manufacturing by optimizing operations and driving engineering excellence.
This is a leadership role that combines technical engineering, project management, and team development, and is ideal for professionals with a strong background in textile engineering, mechanical maintenance, and performance-oriented apparel production.
Key Responsibilities
1. Product Development and Engineering:
- Collaborate with creative and technical design teams during the pilot phase to ensure accurate and efficient garment assembly.
- Interpret technical specifications and engineer manufacturing methods with the lowest possible SMV (Standard Minute Value).
- Validate product viability across the production lifecycle, aligning designs with mass production feasibility and engineering best practices.
2. Process Optimization and Innovation:
- Continuously liaise with manufacturing units to gather insights on production challenges and propose innovative engineering solutions.
- Benchmark global best practices in garment engineering and integrate advanced technologies into production lines where applicable.
- Lead initiatives to introduce automation, folder-making tools, and advanced sewing technologies that boost production efficiency and quality.
3. Mechanical Oversight and Maintenance:
- Supervise mechanical support teams and ensure ongoing maintenance of molding machines and sewing plant equipment.
- Monitor and manage the availability of machine attachments, spare parts, utilities, and other essential resources to prevent downtime.
- Facilitate predictive maintenance schedules and implement condition-monitoring systems for critical assets.
4. Cost Management and Budget Control:
- Develop and manage the technical department’s annual budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction through lean manufacturing principles, energy-saving practices, and waste minimization.
- Track and report engineering costs, analyzing variances and implementing corrective actions.
5. Leadership and People Development:
- Coach, mentor, and lead cross-functional technical teams to foster a high-performance engineering culture.
- Conduct skill assessments and design technical training programs tailored to individual development needs.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and communicative working environment, aligned with MAS’s core values and corporate culture.
6. Tech Pack and Bulk Production Readiness:
- Deliver comprehensive tech packs to production teams, inclusive of specifications, machinery requirements, and setup guidelines.
- Coordinate the pre-production planning process by ensuring all mechanical and technical setups are tested and ready for scaling.
- Review pilot production outcomes and recommend design or method alterations to ensure scalability.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Education:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Engineering, Apparel Technology, or a closely related technical discipline.
- A Postgraduate Degree (MBA, MSc in Industrial Engineering, etc.) is a strong advantage.
- Experience:
- 4 to 5 years of experience in a technical management role within apparel manufacturing.
- Strong background in garment engineering, mechanical maintenance, and apparel production line setup.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent analytical and process re-engineering skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities to coordinate with cross-functional teams.
- Negotiation and influencing skills with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
- Hands-on experience with lean manufacturing, 5S, SMED, and other efficiency improvement frameworks.
