Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this role is to achieve sales targets by effectively engaging with healthcare professionals, pharmacies, and distributors across the assigned territory. The Medical Sales Representative will promote assigned pharmaceutical products based on customer profiles and specialty focus, ensure product availability, and drive demand generation initiatives through scientifically grounded engagement and relationship management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sales & Target Achievement
- Meet and exceed the sales targets and objectives defined by the organization for the assigned territory.
- Continuously analyze and assess the market to uncover new business opportunities and customer needs.
- Prioritize focus and legacy brands to optimize the product lifecycle and profitability.
2. Customer Engagement & Brand Promotion
- Conduct regular visits to doctors, pharmacies, and healthcare institutions in accordance with the set call average and visit frequency standards.
- Promote products using approved medical literature, promotional tools, and digital resources provided by the company.
- Profile customers accurately to determine the customer-brand matrix, ensuring relevant product placement based on specialty, practice pattern, and therapeutic area.
- Deliver scientific messages with clarity, credibility, and alignment to compliance and regulatory standards.
3. Scientific Activities & Events
- Identify scientific needs and interests of healthcare professionals and plan educational engagements accordingly.
- Organize and facilitate Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs, Round Table Discussions (RTDs), and other scientific forums to enhance product awareness and therapeutic understanding.
- Utilize digital platforms and tools to host virtual scientific events and disseminate relevant clinical data.
4. Territory Management & Planning
- Develop a territory-level strategy aligned with the national sales and marketing plans.
- Create weekly and monthly visit plans to ensure optimal coverage and engagement with target customers.
- Monitor stock levels, expiry dates, product returns, and inventory turnover at distributor and pharmacy levels to minimize wastage and ensure timely product availability.
5. Data Management & Reporting
- Maintain an updated and accurate customer database, including doctor specialties, visitation history, and feedback.
- Regularly update call reports and activity logs on the company’s reporting platform.
- Track promotional effectiveness and share insights on competitor activities and market trends with relevant internal stakeholders.
6. Compliance & Professional Standards
- Adhere strictly to industry regulations, ethical promotion practices, and company compliance guidelines.
- Ensure full compliance in executing scientific activities, interactions with healthcare professionals, and reporting mechanisms.
- Act as a responsible representative of the company, upholding its reputation, brand values, and customer trust.
Key Internal Interactions
- Regulatory Affairs Team: Collaborate for insights into new product filings, updates, and approvals.
- Supply Chain Management (SCM): Coordinate regularly to ensure uninterrupted supply of products in the assigned territory.
- Finance Department: Work in tandem to validate business proposals and resolve invoicing or credit-related queries.
- Marketing & Medical Affairs: Receive scientific support, marketing tools, and campaign material.
- Sales Force Effectiveness (SFE) Team: Align on performance metrics and territory analytics for ongoing optimization.
Key External Interactions
- Doctors and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs): Build and maintain high-quality relationships to position the company as a trusted medical partner.
- Pharmacies and Drug Stores: Ensure stock availability, demand generation, and manage returns/expiry risks.
- Distributors: Engage proactively for order fulfillment, inventory tracking, and promotional planning.
- Health Authorities (e.g., MOH, KMCA, Kimadia): Establish credibility and navigate regulatory procedures where applicable.
Skills & Competencies Required
- Sales Expertise: Proven ability to deliver results, build territory, and manage promotional strategies that drive revenue growth.
- Communication & Relationship Building: Excellent interpersonal skills to build trusted relationships with medical professionals, pharmacists, and partners.
- Scientific Acumen: Ability to understand and communicate clinical information effectively; strong grasp of pharmacology and therapeutic segments.
- Territory Planning: Strong organizational and analytical capabilities to design and execute customer coverage plans efficiently.
- Technology Adaptation: Proficiency with digital tools for communication, reporting, and conducting scientific events.
- Problem Solving: Ability to proactively identify challenges in the territory and implement effective solutions.
Educational & Experience Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Science, Pharmacy, Medicine, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical sales or business development.
- Experience in managing distributors, developing marketing campaigns, and engaging with healthcare institutions is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and the Sri Lankan healthcare ecosystem is a plus.

- Achievement of monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets.
- Number of doctor and pharmacy visits per week (Call Average).
- Execution rate of scientific activities (CMEs, RTDs, digital sessions).
- Inventory turnover rates and stock availability within the assigned territory.

- Timeliness and accuracy in reporting and CRM updates.
