Senior Systems Engineer

About the Role
Automattic is hiring experienced systems engineers to support and scale the infrastructure that powers WordPress.com, Jetpack, Tumblr, WooCommerce, and more. This is a chance to work at a global scale—handling tens of billions of monthly requests—while building secure, performant, and reliable systems across our worldwide network of data centers.
You’ll work on a tightly knit, highly skilled team where ownership is broad and responsibility is shared. From networking to storage, performance to security, you’ll help make critical decisions that impact users worldwide. You’ll also be directly involved in deploying, maintaining, and improving the infrastructure stack, with deep insight into every layer.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain high uptime and availability through architecture design, preventive planning, and rapid failure recovery.
- Improve performance across systems—from low-level OS to app-level interaction—ensuring smooth user experiences.
- Harden infrastructure security by monitoring, responding, and enforcing best practices.
- Streamline internal workflows so developers can ship faster with less friction.
- Build tools, write documentation, and solve problems proactively and independently.
- Collaborate with global teammates and participate in occasional in-person meetups.
You Might Be a Good Fit If You
- Have extensive experience running large-scale Nginx setups with complex routing and load balancing.
- Have managed sizable MySQL/MariaDB deployments with strict performance and data integrity goals.
- Understand the internals of Linux systems, from memory and file systems to kernel-level tuning.
- Are comfortable debugging PHP applications at scale and optimizing runtime environments.
- Are thoughtful, detail-oriented, and committed to operational excellence.
- Can work independently and communicate clearly in a fully remote environment.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $120,000–$180,000+ USD
