Job Purpose

As a Human Resources Manager onboard our Ocean vessels, you will be the cornerstone of employee well-being, operational excellence, and leadership development. This role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring deep knowledge of HR best practices, maritime labor compliance, and interpersonal acumen to ensure a high-performing and engaged workforce. You will partner closely with department heads to uphold Viking’s standards in professionalism, service culture, and compliance.


Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations & Compliance

  • Serve as the primary HR leader onboard, ensuring the consistent application of policies and procedures in line with Viking’s values and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).
  • Provide guidance, support, and mediation in all crew-related matters including grievances, interpersonal conflicts, and disciplinary processes.
  • Maintain an open-door policy, ensuring crew members feel heard, respected, and fairly treated.
  • Conduct and document exit interviews, sharing insights with relevant departments to drive improvement.

Leadership Coaching & Development

  • Facilitate ongoing leadership development programs onboard in collaboration with Senior Officers.
  • Conduct performance reviews, assessments, and feedback sessions to encourage professional growth.
  • Mentor department heads in effective team leadership and employee motivation strategies.
  • Identify high-potential talent for succession planning and internal mobility.

Training & Culture Building

  • Implement Viking’s STAR Service Standards and onboard Quality of Life programs to foster a respectful, inclusive, and engaged culture.
  • Deliver training workshops on HR policy, service standards, diversity and inclusion, and ethical behavior.
  • Ensure all new hires receive comprehensive onboarding and cultural immersion training.

Scheduling & Administrative HR Functions

  • Oversee and verify crew time and attendance in accordance with international labor laws and Viking’s internal protocols.
  • Manage crew scheduling changes, requests for department transfers, and all communication with shoreside HR teams.
  • Coordinate crew sign-ons and sign-offs in conjunction with the ship’s captain and shoreside scheduling.

Investigations & Disciplinary Action

  • Lead or participate in investigations related to performance issues, harassment complaints, or policy breaches.
  • Make well-informed, unbiased recommendations and document all proceedings as per company policy.
  • Ensure all disciplinary actions follow due process and are clearly communicated and justified.

Your Profile

Experience & Education

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an HR Manager or equivalent role.
  • HR diploma or degree required; certifications in maritime HR are a plus.
  • Previous shipboard experience preferred but not mandatory.

Skills & Attributes

  • Fluent in English with excellent oral and written communication.
  • Strong administration and computer skills (MS Word, Excel, HRIS systems).
  • Emotionally intelligent with exceptional conflict resolution abilities.
  • Results-oriented, proactive, and empathetic.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, in diverse teams, and across time zones.
