Position Overview

We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Student Counselor to join our academic support team in Kandy. This is a pivotal role responsible for guiding students throughout their educational journey—academically, emotionally, and professionally. The ideal candidate will provide personalized, empathetic support tailored to each student’s unique aspirations and challenges.

This position is best suited for a professional with a strong background in counseling, a deep understanding of student development, and a passion for educational empowerment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Advising:
    Provide one-on-one counseling sessions to help students make informed decisions regarding course selection, academic performance, and future education plans.
  • Career Counseling:
    Offer career guidance, including resume reviews, interview preparation, and career exploration sessions to align students’ goals with current market demands.
  • Student Engagement:
    Organize and lead workshops, seminars, and group sessions on mental health, goal setting, study skills, time management, and transition readiness.
  • Support Services:
    Act as a liaison between students and academic departments, ensuring students have access to the resources and support needed for success.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    Maintain accurate records of counseling sessions, student progress, and action plans in accordance with institutional and ethical guidelines.
  • Collaboration:
    Work closely with faculty, program coordinators, and administrative staff to address academic concerns and coordinate student interventions where needed.
  • Crisis Management:
    Identify signs of emotional distress or academic burnout and respond appropriately with referrals or follow-up counseling.

Required Qualifications

  • A degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in academic advising or student counseling, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, mental health support, and educational pathways.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with student information systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification or certification in Counseling or Psychology.
  • Experience conducting student development workshops or seminars.
  • Fluency in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
  • Familiarity with local and international higher education systems.

Work Environment and Conditions
